Reception Overview 2023-24

Helping your child at home

In Reception, children are encouraged to read every day at home with an adult. Please discuss what you child has read and then record the text in your child’s Reading Record. Reception children are also encouraged to practise reading the words on their key word list at home.

Tapestry

In Early Years, we use Tapestry which is an online system of recording your child’s learning in Nursery and Reception. A massive advantage of this system is that you can instantly add your own comments to entries, add your own entries of your child’s learning at home and you can show your child’s online book to members of the family.

Below is a resource to help you support your children with their phonics. Please scan each of the sounds you want to practise and it will take you to a list of real and nonsense words to practise reading with that sound.

Useful Websites

Here are some websites that you may like to visit to help with your child’s learning this term and beyond:

Letter Join – Handwriting support
Please ask your child’s teacher for the log in details.

Starfall – Phonics and Reading

Watch ‘Jolly Phonics Phase 2 & Phase 3’ songs on YouTube. You could learn these songs with your child to help them remember the phonemes for Phase 2 and 3.

Routines and Reminders

Children will need their reading books, reading records, key word lists and book bags in school everyday.

Reading Books will go home regularly.

In the Early Years, the children have the opportunity to learn outside the classroom. Please provide a warm, waterproof coat and wellies for your child to wear. Wellies can be left in school.
